A day after Rahul Gandhi claimed that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma would be sent to jail over alleged corruption, the BJP leader fired back with a sharp rebuttal—“What is the guarantee that Rahul Gandhi will not be jailed before I am?” Sarma, while addressing reporters on Thursday, also dismissed the Congress leader’s remark with a mocking “thenga” gesture, calling it unbecoming of a national leader to make such sweeping declarations during a political rally.
Gandhi, during a Congress workers’ meet at Chaygaon near Guwahati on Wednesday, had accused Sarma and his family of corruption and claimed the people of Assam would hold them accountable. According to Sarma, the comment wasn’t a one-off—the Congress leader had allegedly made a similar statement during a closed-door meeting with the party’s state Political Affairs Committee, saying, “Take it in writing: Himanta Biswa Sarma will definitely be sent to jail.”
Sarma further reminded Gandhi of his own legal battles, stating that the Congress leader had “conveniently forgotten” he is currently out on bail in multiple criminal cases across the country.
Reacting to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s claim that the Assam government has failed to provide jobs, Sarma countered, “Whether I have given jobs or not, people of Assam know it… A speech won’t change anything.” He asserted that the BJP government has already crossed its promise of one lakh jobs, made during the 2021 elections, and more will be delivered before the end of their current term.
