Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday welcomed the 2008 Malegaon blast verdict and said that “terrorism was never saffron and will never be”.

Fadnavis’ reaction came after a special NIA court in Mumbai acquitted all seven accused, including former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur and Lt Colonel Prasad Purohit, in the 2008 Malegaon blast case.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also reacted following the court’s judgement and said that terrorism has no religion. He also slammed the previous government of labelling the blast as “saffron terrorism”.

“We welcome the court’s judgement. The then government, when blasts were happening across the country, had said that terrorism has no religion. But in the case of the Malegaon blast, they labeled it as saffron terrorism. The court’s verdict is a slap in the face of those people,” he said to CNN-News18.

2008 Malegaon Blast

An explosive device strapped to a motorcycle went off near a mosque in the town, located about 200 km from Mumbai, on September 29, 2008, killing six persons and injuring 101 others.

After 17 years, a special NIA court on Thursday acquitted all seven accused in the case, noting there was “no reliable and cogent evidence” against them.
