Rahul Gandhi’s endorsement of Donald Trump’s “dead economy” remark against India has drawn sharp criticism from the government, which accused the Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition of “speaking against the nation”.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Friday alleged that the Congress leader was “playing a dangerous game” that would harm the country through his endorsement of such views, which were also rejected by many in the Congress party itself.
Rijiju Slams Rahul Gandhi
“Rahul Gandhi speaks against the nation. Many are saying he is playing a dangerous game to harm the country. His anti-India language is being opposed by many prominent people in the Opposition too. They also say you cannot describe India as a dead economy,” Rijiju said.
On Thursday, Rahul Gandhi seconded Trump’s criticism of the Indian economy, keeping it parallel to the Russian economy, and said that everyone “except the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister” knows about it.
“Everybody knows that the Indian economy is a dead economy. I am glad that President Trump has stated a fact. The entire world knows that the Indian economy is a dead economy. BJP has finished the economy to help Adani,” the Congress leader told reporters yesterday.
Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi’s colleague Shashi Tharoor disagreed with Trump’s views and said, “No, not at all. That is not the case, and we all know it.”
A day earlier, several Congress and Opposition leaders did not back Rahul Gandhi’s endorsement of Trump’s views and said that the “Indian economy is not dead”.
Trump’s Criticism Of India-Russia Ties
Hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi called out Trump’s bluff without naming him in the Lok Sabha, stating that “no world leader asked India to stop Operation Sindoor”, Trump has launched his tirade against India, citing its energy and defence ties with Russia.
“They have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia’s largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE- ALL THINGS NOT GOOD! INDIA WILL THEREFORE BE PAYING A TARIFF OF 25%, PLUS A PENALTY FOR THE ABOVE, STARTING ON AUGUST FIRST,” Trump posted on Truth Social earlier.
Later, he criticised India’s trade policies and said. “I don’t care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care.”
