In an unusual debate in Delhi Assembly on Tuesday, an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA quoted ChatGPT during debate over historical accuracy of the “fansi ghar” (gallows room). The debate centred on an underground structure that was discovered in 2021. MLAs were debating whether the section was once a gallows chamber for hanging freedom fighters, or simply a rope-operated lift room meant to deliver tiffins.
In 2021, former Speaker Ram Niwas Goel, called this ‘mysterious’ tunnel a British-era “hanging chamber”.
During the debate on Tuesday, opposition and government leaders were accusing each other of distorting colonial past. The tone of the debate was set by Speaker Vijender Gupta after he questioned the accuracy of the section. Notably, it was inaugurated by former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and then speaker Ram Niwas Goel three years ago.
As per the plaque installed near the section, it was dedicated to “unknown martyrs who were hanged here.” However, BJP refutes the claim and calls it a misinterpretation.

To prove AAP’s claim of gallows room correct, its MLA Jarnail Singh referred ChatGPT and stated, “If you search for ‘gallows in Delhi Assembly’ on ChatGPT today, all the information traces back to here.”
Speaker Vijendra Gupta cancelled out Singh’s claim and refused to accept digital summaries as primary evidence. As per an NDTV report, Gupta said, “Even the lies of ChatGPT are being spread. The people of the country are being misled.”
“It is a tiffin room. The wooden lift found inside was used to carry food and items, not for executions. No evidence has been found to support the presence of gallows,” the speaker added.
Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma also questioned AAP’s narrative and said, “ChatGPT says it was Ram Niwas Goel who described it as a hanging house. But the maps we found from the archives do not support this. We must respect the dignity of the House.”
