TL;DR:

  • Oman’s registered vehicles rose by 5.5% to 1.79 million by mid-2025. Private vehicles dominate at 79.3%, with white cars being the most popular colour (42.3%).
  • Most vehicles have engine capacities between 1500cc and 3000cc, and over 90% weigh less than 3 tonnes.
  • Registration and renewal processes require documents like insurance and ID, with mandatory vehicle inspections for certain cases. Fees vary based on vehicle type and size.

Oman saw a notable increase of 5.5% in the total number of registered vehicles by the end of June 2025, according to the latest figures from the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI). The total vehicle count rose to 1,798,062, signaling expanding mobility trends across the Sultanate.

Dominance of private vehicles

Private vehicles make up the overwhelming majority, accounting for 79.3% of the total 1,425,308 units. This reflects steady population growth, rising affluence, and a broad reliance on personal transport across urban and rural Oman.Commercial vehicles ranked second with a 14.7% share (264,913 vehicles), suggesting continued industrial and logistics activity across sectors. Rental vehicles made up 2.3% (41,386 vehicles), pointing to robust tourism and expatriate-driven demand.Other categories, including taxis and government vehicles, comprised the remaining percentage.

Colour preferences: White remains king

In terms of vehicle aesthetics, white remains the most preferred colour, with over 42.3% (761,358 vehicles) opting for it, a practical choice for high-sunlight environments common in the Gulf region. It is followed by silver at 12.9% (231,822 vehicles) and grey with 10.1% (181,140 vehicles). This trend aligns with regional preferences that lean towards heat-reflective, low-maintenance shades.

Engine capacities reflect consumer preferences

Vehicles with engine capacities between 1500cc and 3000cc dominate the market, making up 54.5% (979,300 vehicles) of the registered fleet. These mid-range engines are typically found in sedans, compact SUVs, and crossovers, popular choices for families and young professionals.Larger engines (3001cc–4500cc) account for 22.2% (399,770 vehicles) and are generally associated with luxury models, high-performance vehicles, or utility SUVs suited to Oman’s varied terrain. The data further reveals that 90.7% (1,631,392 vehicles) of the total registered vehicles weigh less than 3 tonnes, indicating the dominance of light passenger and commercial vehicles in Oman’s transportation sector.

A broader mobility trend

The mid-2025 figures underscore the resilience and steady expansion of Oman’s vehicle market, bolstered by government infrastructure projects, growing urban centres, and strong consumer demand. As Oman continues its diversification under Vision 2040, the rising vehicle registrations serve as a tangible indicator of economic momentum and the evolving mobility preferences of its population. The steady 5.5% growth in vehicle registrations by mid-2025 highlights Oman’s expanding mobility landscape and economic vitality. Dominated by private, light-weight vehicles and a strong preference for mid-sized engines and practical colours like white, the data reflects evolving consumer choices aligned with lifestyle and environmental factors. As Oman progresses toward its Vision 2040 goals, these trends not only underscore increasing personal and commercial transport needs but also emphasize the importance of sustainable infrastructure development to accommodate this upward trajectory in vehicle ownership and usage.
