Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jeetu Patwari triggered a political storm with his controversial claim that women in Madhya Pradesh consume more alcohol than anywhere else in the country.

Addressing a press conference in Bhopal, Patwari also accused the BJP government’s policies of drowning the state in intoxication.

“If your son is unemployed and comes home under the influence of drugs, I say with full confidence that the responsibility lies with the BJP, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, and Mohan Yadav,” Congress leader Jitu Patwari said.

“Madhya Pradesh has earned the dubious distinction of women consuming the most alcohol in the country, and the BJP has ruined the situation. I say this with full certainty. The reason I said this is that no other state, not even Punjab, has such a widespread drug trade; most of it happens in Madhya Pradesh. Yet, our Chief Minister has never made efforts to free us from this drug menace,” he added.

He further stated that the BJP sought votes in the name of schemes like Ladli Behna, but never took serious steps to protect women from substance abuse.

Meanwhile, the comments drew a sharp criticism from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, with party spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi calling Patwari’s comments as “indecent.”

Notably, the National Family Health Survey-5 (NFHS-5) data contradicts the Congress leader’s claim. According to the official data, the women’s alcohol consumption is highest in Arunachal Pradesh, where nearly 26 percent of women drink alcohol.

In Sikkim, the figure stands at 16.2 percent, while Assam, Telangana, and Jharkhand also feature among the top states.

Meanwhile, only 1.6 percent of women in Madhya Pradesh consume alcohol, placing the state far below the national average.
