A 55-year-old retired electricity worker and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) block general secretary was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Pakauli village under Bidupur police station area of Vaishali district in Bihar late Monday night.

The incident occurred around 11 pm while the deceased, Shiv Shankar was travelling from his old house in Bhairopur to his new residence in Pakauli. The criminals, who were lying in ambush, fired four bullets at him, resulting in his immediate death.

Upon receiving the report of the incident, Bidupur police station officers arrived at the scene and recovered four shell casings. Family members stated that Shiv Shankar had no known enemies, but the incident has caused significant tension in the area, with locals demanding prompt action.

The Station House Officer (SHO) of Bidupur police station revealed that the motive behind the murder remains unclear in the initial investigation. The police are currently examining nearby CCTV footage to identify the criminals, and suspects are being questioned. An additional police force has been deployed to control the situation.

Shiv Shankar Singh, who had taken up land buying and selling after retirement, leaves behind a family that includes a son who works as a manager at Indian Overseas Bank. Singh had constructed a new house in Pakauli five years ago. The family is demanding the immediate arrest of the perpetrators and stringent action against them.

The murder of the active RJD block general secretary has also intensified political tensions in Bihar. Previous attacks on RJD leaders and workers in Vaishali have raised concerns that this murder might escalate into a political issue. There is considerable anger among local residents and RJD supporters, leading to protests and calls for justice.

The Vaishali Superintendent of Police has announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to expedite the capture of the criminals.
