The Afghan minister for refugees was killed on Wednesday in an explosion that took place at the ministry’s offices in Kabul, according to a report from news agency AFP.
“Unfortunately an explosion happened at the ministry of refugees and minister Khalil Ur-Rahman Haqqani has been martyred along with some of his colleagues,” said the official, who requested anonymity.
Khalil Ur-Rahman Haqqani was a sibling of Jalaluddin Haqqani, the founder of the notorious Haqqani network, which orchestrated some of the most brutal attacks during the Taliban’s twenty-year insurgency.
He was the paternal uncle of the present interior minister, Sirajuddin Haqqani.
Since the Taliban assumed control of Afghanistan in 2021, concluding their conflict with US and Nato-led foreign forces, the level of violence has decreased.
However, Islamic State Khorasan, the regional branch of Islamic State, remains operational in Afghanistan and continues to conduct gun and bomb attacks targeting civilians, foreigners and Taliban officials.
