Back in the 1990s, Akshay Kumar and Shilpa Shetty shared a connection that drew plenty of media attention. However, the relationship ended a few years later. Recently, filmmaker Suneel Darshan, who has often worked with Akshay, revealed that the two were once seriously considering marriage. According to him, Shilpa’s parents had laid down certain terms before agreeing to the match, and when those conditions weren’t fulfilled, it seemingly created obstacles in their path. Darshan hinted that this may have been one of the reasons behind the couple’s eventual split.
Suneel Darshan says destiny had other plans for Akshay Kumar
Speaking to Bollywood Thikana, filmmaker Suneel reflected on the past equation between Akshay and Shilpa, calling them a “good looking couple” but adding that “destiny has its own plans.” He revealed that years ago, an astrologer close to Twinkle Khanna’s father, Rajesh Khanna, had made a surprising prediction — that Akshay and Twinkle would marry someday. At that time, Suneel admitted he didn’t pay attention to it, saying, “They had nothing to do with each other at the time.” Looking back, he found it ironic, remarking, “Look at the coincidence, had Shilpa’s parents not placed those conditions, life would have taken a different turn.” When questioned about those conditions, Suneel explained, “As parents, whatever the parents need for the security of their daughter. That’s not wrong.”

When the conversation turned to whether he meant financial security, Suneel responded, “Security of all kinds, all parents want that.” He went on to express that he didn’t fully agree with the approach taken by Shilpa’s parents, adding, “I thought it was wrong of the parents. It was not destined to happen. Let’s look at it that way.”
Akshay Kumar was busy with multiple films after the breakup
The breakup occurred not long before the filming of Ek Rishta. Reflecting on that time, when Suneel was asked whether Akshay had been heartbroken, he replied, “His heart was not broken. I thought he was doing well. He was coming back.” Suneel recalled that Akshay was deeply occupied with his work then, managing multiple films ‘Dhadkan’, ‘Hera Pheri’ and ‘Ek Rishta’ all around the same period.
