A political storm has erupted in West Bengal after Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Humayun Kabir announced to lay the foundation stone of his proposed Babri Masjid in Murshidabad on December 6 to mark the anniversary of the demolition of the original one that once existed at Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh.

The MLA Bharatpur, which announced the proposal of the mosque last year, said the event is expected to draw nearly two lakh people, with over 400 prominent personalities present on stage, and that construction would take about three years.

However, the remarks soon drew sharp attacks from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which accused the ruling TMC of engaging in “religion-based politics” and “appeasement politics”.

BJP leader Agnimitra Paul said, “Anyone can build temples or mosques, but the TMC plays politics in the name of religion. Their motive behind choosing the date of December 6 is clear. The question is, what has the TMC done for minorities so far?”

BJP leader Priyanka Tibrewal said that the TMC’s secularism is “religion-specific,” saying, “When they say they will re-establish the Babri Masjid, I want to know who they will call to that Babri Masjid? Those Rohingyas who are now in fear of SIR running to border areas? This is nothing but appeasement politics.”

What Kabir Announced?

The Bharatpur MLA announced that the foundation stone of a mosque named ‘Babri’ will be laid on December 6 in Beldanga, Murshidabad district.

“The mosque will take three years to complete. Last year, on December 12, I made this promise. Around two lakh people are expected to attend the ceremony, with 400 prominent personalities present on the stage,” Kabir told news agency IANS.

The December 6 event coincides with a major TMC gathering in Kolkata, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee will address a rally to mark Samhati Diwas (Unity Day) on the anniversary of the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition. The rally is aimed at sending a message of harmony amid the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in the state ahead of the assembly polls

Kabir has, however, announced to skip the Kolkata programme to oversee the foundation stone ceremony in Beldanga, reiterating that he has observed December 6 as a “black day” every year since 1992.

This is not the first time the Bharatpur MLA has defied his party leadership or made controversial statements.

Earlier, Kabir threatened to launch a new party ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly polls. Kabir has repeatedly challenged the TMC leadership over the past year, even threatening to form a new political outfit ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls. He has clashed with party leaders, including Baharampur MP Yusuf Pathan, and the TMC has issued him multiple show-cause notices.

Kabir has been censured by the Trinamool Congress leadership a number of times and even slapped with show-cause notices for making public statements that caused embarrassment to the party.

Despite repeated reprimands, Kabir has continued making statements that put the party on the defensive — and the latest announcement has once again placed the TMC in a politically sensitive spot.
