Apart from creating memorable songs like ‘Jiya Jale’ from Dil Se and ‘Luka Chuppi’ from Rang De Basanti, AR Rahman and the late Lata Mangeshkar shared a strong personal connection. Rahman has often said that Lata ji influenced not just his music but also his approach to life. In a recent interview, he shared that it was Lata Mangeshkar who taught him the true value of regular practice, or riyaz, in music.
Learning the Importance of Riyaz
When asked about his pre-stage routine or vocal exercises, AR Rahman told Mashable India that he picked up the habit of riyaz from Lata Mangeshkar. He admitted that earlier he didn’t practice much before live shows, believing that as a composer, audiences would understand his style. He added that during a 2006 concert in Hyderabad, organized by Lata Ji’s foundation, he overheard someone doing vocal practice before the show. To his surprise, it was Lata Mangeshkar herself, rehearsing with a harmonium. Rahman recalled thinking, “She’s Lata Mangeshkar—why does she need to practice?” That moment made him realize the value of consistent preparation.
Starting His Own Riyaz Routine
After witnessing Lata Mangeshkar’s dedication, AR Rahman began doing riyaz before his concerts. He shared that since then, he’s made it a regular part of his routine, saying, “That’s when I started riyazing. I now practice for around 30 to 40 minutes before going on stage.”
