The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi over his Constitution Day message, calling it “deeply hypocritical” and accusing the Congress of having a history of undermining the very document he sought to celebrate.

BJP slams Rahul Gandhi’s ‘hypocrisy’

BJP leader CR Kesavan strongly criticised Rahul Gandhi’s post on X (formerly Twitter), likening it to “Aurangzeb preaching about tolerance” and “Mir Jafar lecturing on loyalty”. He argued that the Congress had forfeited its moral right to speak about constitutional values due to its actions during the Emergency.

“Rahul Gandhi talking about the virtues of our sacred Constitution is as hypocritical as Aurangzeb preaching about tolerance and as paradoxical as Mir Jafar lecturing on loyalty,” Kesavan said. He further alleged that the Congress, referred to as the “Indira Nehru Congress”, had “murdered the Constitution” during the 1975 Emergency, even going so far as to amend the Preamble to consolidate power.

Kesavan accused Rahul Gandhi of having “scant regard or respect” for Dr BR Ambedkar’s Constitution, stating that the Congress leader routinely “slanders the democratic process” and “maligns constitutional institutions”.

On Constitution Day, he added, it would be appropriate for the Congress and Rahul Gandhi to “seek forgiveness and tender a public apology” to the nation and to future generations for the “assault on democracy”.

“Here we have Prime Minister Modi, who on the occasion of Constitution Day wrote a letter to the citizens of the country, paying tribute to Babasaheb Ambedkar and the people of India. On the other hand, those who believe in dynastic politics and are responsible for eroding democracy are talking about saving the Constitution. Rahul Gandhi’s family has no faith in constitutional institutions like the Election Commission and the Supreme Court. They make ‘vote chori’ allegations against the EC and refuse to accept Supreme Court verdicts,” said Shehzad Poonawalla hitting out at Rahul Gandhi and Congress.

What Rahul Gandhi said on Constitution Day?

Rahul Gandhi’s post had emphasised the Constitution as a “sacred promise” to every Indian, regardless of religion, caste, region, language, or economic background. He described it as a shield for the poor and a guarantor of justice, equality and respect.

“The Constitution of India is not just a book; it is a sacred promise made to every citizen,” he wrote, asserting that the rights of all Indians are safe as long as the Constitution remains secure.

Gandhi also urged citizens to resist any perceived attempts to weaken constitutional protections, declaring it his duty to defend the Constitution “from every assault”. He ended the message with Constitution Day greetings and the words “Jai Hind, Jai Constitution”.

What is typically observed as a day of reflection on India’s democratic foundations quickly turned into a political flashpoint, with the BJP and Congress trading barbs. While Rahul Gandhi used the occasion to call for the protection of constitutional values, the BJP countered by highlighting what it describes as Congress’s historical violations.
