The BJP on Sunday came down heavily on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and accused her of “weaponsing” the Bengali language for appeasement and vote-bank politics.

Banerjee earlier lashed out at the Delhi Police for referring to Bengali as “Bangladeshi national language” in a purported letter. She alleged that this was “insulting, anti-national and unconstitutional”.

The BJP, however, called her out for her “shameful” attempt at using language for political gains and pointing a finger at a “lawful police action”.

“It is beyond shameful that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is defending a lawful police action against illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators by weaponising language and stoking sentiment,” (sic) BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya wrote on X.

Malviya sought to reaffirm the Centre’s tough stand on Bangladeshi and Rohingya illegals, and said “infiltrators” will be strictly dealt with.

“Let us be absolutely clear: all illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators and Rohingyas will be dealt with strictly, as per the law of the land. No political grandstanding or vote-bank politics will come in the way of protecting India’s sovereignty and national security,” (sic) he said, adding, “of all people, Mamata Banerjee should know this.” (sic)

WHAT DID MAMATA BANERJEE SAY?

Banerjee drew attention to the Delhi Police’s wording for the Bengali language as “Bangladeshi national language” in a purported letter, linked to a probe under the ‘Foreigners’ Act’.

According to the letter cited by her, the police sought a translator following the arrest of eight people suspected to have illegally crossed over into India from Bangladesh. It is addressed to the officer-in-charge of Banga Bhawan, which is the official guest house of the West Bengal government in New Delhi.

Sharing this purported letter on her social media, the chief minister and TMC boss accused the Centre of being anti-Bengali and urged all to protest against such “anti-constitutional language to insult and humiliate Bengali-speaking people of India”.

“See now how Delhi Police under the direct control of the Ministry of Home, Government of India, is describing Bengali as “Bangladeshi” language!” Banerjee posted on her Facebook account and X.

She said Bengali is not only her mother tongue but also the language of Rabindranath Tagore and Swami Vivekananda. She added that Bengali was the language in which both India’s national anthem, ‘Jana Gana Mana’ by Tagore and national song ‘Vande Mataram’ by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay were written.

“… the language in which crores of Indians speak and write, the language which is sanctified and recognised by the Constitution of India, is now described as a Bangladeshi language!!” she wrote. “Scandalous, insulting, anti-national, unconstitutional!! This insults all Bengali-speaking people of India. They cannot use this kind of language, which degrades and debases us all. We urge immediate, strongest possible protests from all against the anti-Bengali Government of India who are using such anti-Constitutional language to insult and humiliate the Bengali-speaking people of India.”
