Amid ongoing speculation of a power struggle within the Karnataka Congress, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed confidence on Tuesday about completing a full term in office, while emphasising that any decision regarding a leadership change lies solely with the party high command.
Speaking to the media in Mysuru, Siddaramaiah stated, “The high command has to decide on leadership change. I don’t know when they will decide. I believe that I will be the CM for the entire term. However, the high command has to make the final decision.”
On Wednesday, Siddaramaiah becomes the longest-serving Chief Minister of Karnataka, surpassing the record of former CM Devaraj Urs, who served for 2,792 days, or 7 years and 239 days. Nonetheless, Siddaramaiah mentioned that breaking records was never his goal. “I didn’t get into politics to break any records. It’s only a coincidence. I didn’t even know how many days Devaraj Urs served as CM,” he said. “With the blessing of the people, I have gotten the chance to break the record set by Devaraj Urs.”
Reiterating that his tenure was rooted in popular support, Siddaramaiah said he had become Chief Minister with the blessings of the people and that serving them gave him happiness. “I’m content because I have the chance to serve the people, to get justice for the underprivileged and backward classes,” he said.
Reacting to Siddaramaiah’s remarks, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar sought to downplay any suggestion of internal discord. “I wish him all the best; good luck. There is no confusion amongst us; it is you who has confusions. I wish him good luck,” Shivakumar said.
