The political cauldron of Bihar is set to boil over as the crucial first phase of the assembly elections gets underway on Thursday. Polling will take place across 121 constituencies spread over 18 districts, setting the tone for the entire two-phase election (the second phase is on November 11) and determining the fate of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) against the resurgent Mahagathbandhan.

With the fate of 1,314 candidates, including political veterans and prominent debutants, to be sealed by the voters, this phase is a high-stakes referendum on the incumbent NDA and the challenging Mahagathbandhan. Also, the Prashant Kishor-led Jan Suraaj Party’s performance in recent bypolls suggests it can influence outcomes, even if it doesn’t win seats outright.

The Electoral Calculus and Demographic Stakes

This opening salvo covers a massive electorate, making up nearly half of Bihar’s total 243 seats. The Election Commission has mobilised an enormous force to ensure fair polling, emphasising webcasting from every polling station to enhance transparency. The districts going to polls stretch across central and north Bihar, including key areas like Patna, Vaishali, Muzaffarpur, Gopalganj, Munger, and Darbhanga.

While the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA)—comprising the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Janata Dal (United), and allies—is banking on the dual appeal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s national image and chief minister Nitish Kumar’s long-standing governance record, the Mahagathbandhan (RJD, Congress, and Left parties) is relying on the youthful exuberance and economic promises of Tejashwi Yadav. The contest pivots on two competing narratives: the NDA’s focus on the “Mahila” (women) voter base and the Mahagathbandhan’s bold pitch to the “Yuva” (youth) voters through a promise of guaranteed employment.

High-Profile Contests

The first phase is laden with symbolic battles featuring the state’s most prominent political figures:

Raghopur: The undisputed centrepiece of Phase I, where Mahagathbandhan’s chief ministerial face, Tejashwi Yadav (RJD), defends his seat against the BJP’s Satish Kumar. Tejashwi has dominated this Yadav-centric constituency, winning two consecutive terms, and maintaining this victory is paramount to the RJD’s prestige and the morale of the INDIA bloc.

Tarapur: This Munger district seat pits deputy chief minister Samrat Choudhary (BJP) against the RJD’s Arun Shah. Choudhary, a key OBC face of the BJP, is contesting an assembly poll after 15 years, making this a crucial personal test for the party’s leadership structure.

Mahua: A genuine family feud is playing out here, with Tej Pratap Yadav, Lalu Prasad Yadav’s estranged son, contesting on the ticket of his new party, the Janshakti Janata Dal (JJD). He faces the RJD’s official candidate, Mukesh Kumar Raushan, splintering the traditional Yadav vote and introducing unpredictability into the Vaishali belt.

Mokama: The most controversial seat, which will test the power of the “Bahubali” factor. The JD(U)’s Anant Singh, arrested recently in a murder case, is fighting to retain his long-held seat. This contest pits the issue of law and order directly against a deep-seated legacy of political strongmanship.

Alinagar: The BJP has executed a bold strategy by fielding 29-year-old popular folk singer Maithili Thakur, aiming to mobilise youth and cultural pride against the seasoned RJD veteran Binod Mishra. Her success or failure will be a key indicator of the effectiveness of the BJP’s outreach to younger, non-traditional voters.

The campaign’s conclusion on Wednesday set the stage for a tight, two-phase showdown. With the results scheduled for November 14, the verdict from these 121 constituencies on Thursday will provide the first significant indication of whether the Nitish-led NDA can successfully ward off the RJD’s aggressively populist, jobs-focused challenge. The voter turnout, especially the participation of women and first-time voters, will be the first crucial metric to watch.
