It promises to be a hectic weekend for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs as the party gears up for the vice-presidential election scheduled for Tuesday, September 9.
Known for functioning like a well-oiled machine, the BJP is leaving nothing to chance. Ensuring maximum participation of its lawmakers, the party has lined up a series of engagements in the national capital beginning Saturday, September 6.
On Saturday evening, BJP national president and Rajya Sabha leader JP Nadda is scheduled to host a dinner for MPs from both Houses. Sunday will see day-long training sessions at the Balayogi Auditorium in Parliament, with Nadda and several Union Ministers addressing the members.
The training continues on Monday, September 8, from 3 pm to 6 pm. In a strategic move, NDA MPs heading various parliamentary committees have been asked to schedule their meetings on the same day to ensure members remain in Delhi.
The party’s last such intensive ‘Karyashala’ was on August 4, 2019, a day before the government moved to revoke Article 370. That session was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself, underscoring the importance of such gatherings.
On Monday evening, just ahead of polling day, the Prime Minister will host NDA MPs and leaders for dinner at his official residence, 7 Lok Kalyan Marg. His message on the eve of the election is expected to set the tone for the alliance.
Polling for the vice-presidential post will take place on September 9, with results likely to be declared the same day.
The NDA has nominated Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan as its candidate. The Opposition has fielded its nominee too, though the numbers are clearly stacked in favour of the ruling alliance, which commands a majority in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
Still, senior BJP leaders have been tasked with ensuring every vote is secured, leaving no room for complacency.
