BJP’s digital presence in West Bengal has been expanding since the 2019 Lok Sabha campaign, during which the party invested significantly in targeted social-media outreach.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has deployed an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven digital outreach strategy in West Bengal ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. Senior party sources told News18 that the organisation has been developing a new slate of creative formats, designed specifically for online platforms, to expand its reach among young voters and to tap into Bengal’s long-standing cultural repertoire.

In accordance with the plan, the party began rolling out a series of AI-generated videos from Sunday. The content will feature well-known characters from Bengali cinema, literature and comics, reimagined through AI graphics and storytelling tools. The inaugural video in the series depicts Gupi and Bagha—the protagonists of Satyajit Ray’s classic “Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne”—travelling through a time machine. Instead of discovering the envisioned “Sonar Bangla”, the characters arrive in a version of present-day Bengal that, according to the storyline, struggles with inadequate industrial growth, declining educational standards and concerns over women’s safety.

Party insiders indicated that this will be the first instalment in a longer AI-driven campaign. Additional videos will feature characters such as Batul the Great, and the popular comic duo Nante-Phante. These characters will be used to narrate storylines that contrast perceived governance lapses in Bengal with the party’s stated vision for the state’s future development.

“The series will continue with more such creative concepts,” a senior BJP functionary told News18. “By bringing back well-loved Bengali characters and tapping into cultural nostalgia, the party aims to connect with a much broader audience, including first-time voters and Gen Z.”

Another leader said the objective is to reframe political messaging through familiar cultural touchpoints. “Our aim is to highlight Bengal’s rich cultural heritage through stories people have grown up with, but to present them in a contemporary and engaging format. We believe that BJP is the only party that understands what Bengalis aspire for, and it is a party that has deep historical roots in Bengal.”

BJP’s digital presence in West Bengal has been expanding since the 2019 Lok Sabha campaign, during which the party invested significantly in targeted social-media outreach. However, party officials say that leveraging iconic Bengali comic and film characters through AI represents a new phase intended to strengthen emotional connection with voters. The emphasis, they added, will be on high-frequency distribution across platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and emerging short-video channels.

With political communication increasingly integrating disruptive technologies, party strategists believe AI-enabled content will play a major role in shaping voter engagement ahead of the polls. According to them, the upcoming series marks BJP’s effort to align with this broader trend and to introduce a distinctive cultural narrative into the digital election campaign in Bengal.
