The BJP is preparing to contest the upcoming local body elections, including the crucial Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls, without alliance partners, sources have said. The party is reportedly considering fielding its own candidates independently, signalling a shift in strategy aimed at consolidating its base in Mumbai.

In an organisational reshuffle, senior leader Poonam Mahajan is likely to be named the next Mumbai BJP president, replacing Ashish Shelar. BJP is likely to announce her name soon. The frontrunners for the position were Poonam Mahajan, Ameet Satam, and Pravin Darekar.

A series of meetings was recently held in Delhi between Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to finalise the leadership changes.

Sources added that the formal announcement is expected after a final round of talks with Shelar, who returned to Mumbai earlier today after being away.

According to News18 Marathi, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is currently in Delhi, where key developments related to Maharashtra’s political and developmental roadmap have reportedly taken place. Senior sources indicate that high-level meetings in the capital have led to important decisions regarding the Mahayuti government’s upcoming strategy, including whether to contest the local body elections collectively or go solo in select regions.

The Supreme Court had earlier directed that local body elections be held within the next four months, setting the stage for a monsoon or post-monsoon electoral battle. As both ruling and opposition blocs begin groundwork, the BJP’s recalibrated strategy signals a new phase in Maharashtra’s urban politics.

The Mahavikas Aghadi, too, appears fragmented, giving the BJP further reason to test its strength on its own in key cities
