‘Bronx Girl’ or Yorktown Grad? NY Republican challenges AOC’s suburban roots with yearbook photo after Trump clash
‘Bronx Girl’ or Yorktown Grad? NY Republican challenges AOC’s suburban roots with yearbook photo after Trump clash

A latest social media fracas between President Donald Trump and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has drawn additional scrutiny after a New York state lawmaker challenged the congresswoman’s claims about her upbringing. The confrontation erupted when Ocasio-Cortez criticized Trump’s weekend strikes on Iranian nuclear installations, calling for his impeachment over what she characterized as unauthorized military action. Taking to Truth Social, Trump responded sharply, calling Ocasio-Cortez “stupid” and “one of the ‘dumbest’ people in Congress.”Trump’s post also questioned Ocasio-Cortez’s qualifications for office, stating that examining her test scores would reveal she is “NOT qualified for office.” He extended his criticism to other progressive lawmakers, including Representatives Jasmine Crockett and Ilhan OmarOcasio-Cortez responded to this personal attack with a series of posts on X, where she invoked her “Bronx girl” identity who could “eat Queens boys for breakfast” – a direct reference to Trump’s own Queens upbringing.Read: ‘Go ahead and try impeaching me, again’: Trump names ‘stupid AOC’, Ilhan Omar, Jasmin Crockett in angry postState Assemblyman Matt Slater, a Republican, responded to Ocasio-Cortez’s Bronx references by posting a yearbook photo from Yorktown High School showing the congresswoman as a freshman. Slater was a senior at the same suburban school, located nearly an hour north of the Bronx.“If you’re a BX girl then why are you in my Yorktown yearbook? Give it up already,” Slater tweeted.Speaking to Fox News, Slater said he was motivated by what he saw as misrepresentation. “When I saw the tweet making her out to be this tough Bronx girl, I’d just had enough,” he stated. “You’re from Yorktown. Let’s end this charade and come clean.”Slater argued that Ocasio-Cortez’s continued emphasis on her Bronx roots while downplaying her Yorktown education was misleading to voters, calling it a “charade” that he believes disrespects the town. Drawing a comparison to his own background, he said, “I went to college in New Hampshire. I don’t say I’m from New Hampshire.” He further suggested that the congresswoman’s portrayal of her upbringing was crafted for political purposes, stating, “Clearly, hiding or distorting her roots was done for a very specific reason, and obviously that reason was to help her get elected.”In a 2018 tweet, Ocasio-Cortez had acknowledged her Yorktown upbringing, describing it as “a good town for working people” and explaining: “My mom scrubbed toilets so I could live here & I grew up seeing how the zip code one is born in determines much of their opportunity.”Ocasio-Cortez represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, which includes portions of the Bronx and Queens. She has frequently referenced her Bronx background in public statements and social media posts throughout her time in Congress.
