A day after a key meeting in New Delhi with union Jal Shakti minister CR Patil, Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu reiterated his call for cooperation between his state and neighbouring Telangana on river water sharing. Speaking at a public gathering in Nandikotkur, Nandyal district, Naidu emphasised that there is no need for conflict between the two states.

“There is enough water—both states need it. Let us avoid confrontation and work with a spirit of give and take. If we can stop the water from flowing into the sea and use it properly, both Rayalaseema and Telangana will benefit,” Naidu said.

Referring to the bifurcation of then-undivided Andhra Pradesh in 2014, Naidu noted that Telangana retained many assets, while Andhra faced challenges and losses. “Despite the setbacks, we must rebuild. I take full responsibility for the development of Andhra Pradesh,” he asserted.

He also outlined practical steps taken in the recent meeting. “We proposed that the Godavari River Management Board be located in Hyderabad and the Krishna Board in Vijayawada. If there are repairs needed at the Srisailam plunge pool, we are ready to fund them ourselves,” he said.

Naidu highlighted that two rounds of meetings have already taken place to assess water usage, with a consensus that states would use water en bloc based on pre-bifurcation patterns. “This approach will ensure fair distribution and address shortages in critical regions,” he said.

He further expressed willingness to let Telangana utilise Godavari waters when required and supported the Centre’s broader river-linking vision.

Recalling his time as chief minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh and later as opposition leader, Naidu said he has remained committed to the cause of irrigation. “Even during my days in opposition, I toured districts, explained projects with PowerPoint presentations, and even got arrested in Nandyal—but I never gave up. I will continue to work towards strengthening our irrigation network,” he said.

On Wednesday, the meeting in Delhi was a 90-minute discussion where both states agreed to install telemetry systems at reservoir and canal points to ensure transparent water usage—a proposal initiated by Telangana and accepted by Andhra Pradesh.

The two states also agreed to jointly undertake repairs and safety works at the Srisailam Project, reflecting a new spirit of cooperation. A joint committee of technical experts and senior officials will be set up by next Monday to address long-pending water projects in the Krishna and Godavari basins, including Polavaram and Banakacherla. The Centre has directed the committee to work on a fast-track basis.

It was also decided that the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) will function from Vijayawada, while the Godavari Board (GRMB) will remain in Hyderabad. The Jal Shakti ministry will oversee the coordination process. Government sources hailed the outcome as a “positive development”, underscoring the Centre’s push for dialogue and collaboration between the Telugu states. Further talks at the CM or apex level may be held if needed, with regular interstate reviews encouraged.
