The Mumbai Police have registered a case against NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar for allegedly obstructing public servants after he got engaged in a heated exchange with a police officer at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan police station.

A video of Rohit Pawar, the grandnephew of NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar, went viral among the netizens where was heard shouting in Marathi at a sub-inspector at the Azad Maidan police station.

“Keep your voice down, keep your voice down. If you raise your hand, I will teach you a lesson,” he was heard saying.

Based on a complaint, a case has been registered against Rohit Pawar for allegedly obstructing public servants in discharging duty, an official said as quoted by news agency PTI.

What’s The Row?

According to news agency PTI, Pawar and NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad went to the police station to locate an injured party worker, Nitin Deshmukh. Deshmukh, a close aide of Awhad was allegedly assaulted by supporters of BJP MLC Gopichand Padalkar in the violent clash at the premises of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.

Both groups were detained inside the assembly till late at night. After this, supporters of both parties were handed over to the Marine Drive police.

Awhad allegedly sat in front of a police vehicle outside the assembly when his supporter was being taken to the police station, said an official. The police  said they repeatedly requested the MLA to move. But when he refused, he was forcibly removed by the officials, he said.

Unable to get clear answers about Deshmukh’s whereabouts, Pawar, accompanied by supporters, reached Azad Maidan Police Station, where tensions peaked. A heated exchange between Pawar and a police sub-inspector was caught on camera, showing the MLA visibly upset.

Senior police officers had to intervene to de-escalate the situation.

Pawar later told reporters at Vidhan Bhavan that a police officer had raised his voice and failed to provide clear information, which led to the argument. “We only came to ask about our colleague. Instead of helping us, the police were vague and evasive,” he alleged.
