Amid indications that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may respond to the debate on Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address in the evening, the Lok Sabha was adjourned on Wednesday after women MPs from the opposition reportedly refused to budge from around his seat in the House.

From the Nehru remark by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey to Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s “my traitor friend” jibe at ex-colleague and MP Ravneet Singh Bittu, it was an explosive day in Parliament.

Soon after the Lok Sabha reassembled at 5 pm, the Chair adjourned the House till Thursday (February 5) amid repeated disruptions by the opposition over a variety of issues.

PLANS TO ‘GHERAO’ PM MODI?

According to sources, women MPs from the opposition — mainly from the Congress — stood near where Modi sits in the House, obstructing the aisle where he would have to walk to reach it.

Congress MPs Varsha Gaikwad, Jyotimani and others stood near Modi’s seat and refused to move away even after Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw tried to reason with them, the sources said.

Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra later told news agency ANI that the Centre “cannot prepare opposition speech…we will speak what we want to”.

The sources further said the women MPs from the opposition were planning to disrupt the prime minister, and reached the House before it assembled. They said their posturing “appeared very aggressive” and there will be “another attempt tomorrow” by the Congress to disrupt him during his address.

They said it is the government’s understanding that the women MPs would attempt to gherao the PM as he walked to the House, which is why it was decided to adjourn for the day.
