Deadly bus crash in West Sumatra kills 12, dozens injured after brakes fail

At least 12 people were killed when a bus carrying 34 passengers lost control on a downhill road and overturned in Indonesia‘s West Sumatra province on Tuesday. At least 23 others were injured, according to police.The driver was among those in critical condition.The bus was en route from Medan in North Sumatra province to Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, when its brakes failed near a bus terminal in Padang city, West Sumatra, according to Reza Chairul Akbar Sidiq, director of West Sumatra traffic police.He added that police were still investigating the cause of the accident. Providing details, survivors told authorities that the driver lost control of the vehicle in a hilly area of Padang after the brakes malfunctioned.Local television footage showed the damaged bus lying on its side. Rescue workers from the National Search and Rescue Agency, police and people nearby were helping, while the ambulances transported the injured victims and the deceased.Last year, a bus with 61 students and teachers returning from a trip near Jakarta crashed into cars and motorbikes after its brakes failed, killing 11 students and injuring many others. In 2023, a tourist bus driven by a tired driver hit a billboard on a highway in East Java, killing 14 people and injuring 19.
