Deadly shooting in Northern Ireland kills 2; police say no ongoing threat, probe launched

Two people died and two others were seriously injured Wednesday morning after a shooting in the village of Maguiresbridge in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. The incident occurred in the Drummeer Road area, around 75 miles southwest of Belfast.Emergency services responded to the scene shortly after 8:21 am. Following assessment and initial treatment at scene, one patient was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, by air ambulance and another to South West Acute Hospital by ambulance, said a spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.Police have cordoned off the area and confirmed there is no ongoing risk to the public. A spokesperson for the Police Service of Northern Ireland said, as reported by Sky News, “We can advise there is no ongoing risk to the public.” No motive has been disclosed at this stage.Sinn Féin MP Pat Cullen expressed deep shock over the shooting. “I am in contact with the police around this ongoing situation. Police are currently at the scene of an incident outside Maguiresbridge and there are a number of road closures while they carry out their investigations,” she said, as quoted by Sky News. Cullen also urged the public “not to speculate on the details of this tragic and shocking incident.”DUP MLA Deborah Erskine, who represents the area in the Northern Ireland Assembly, said the community was “stunned” by the events. “Everyone is deeply affected by what has happened this morning,” she added, noting the quiet and rural nature of the area.
