The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is demanding the arrest of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA and Leader of the Opposition Atishi over alleged derogatory remarks on a Sikh Guru. However, Atishi has firmly denied the charges.

Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has rejected the controversy and accused the BJP of diverting people’s attention from a stalled debate on Delhi air pollution in the Assembly.

Senior BJP leaders, led by former MP Ramesh Bidhuri, on Wednesday filed a police complaint, alleging that Atishi made offensive comments against Guru Teg Bahadur in a video that is being circulated on social media.

The BJP also claimed the remarks were deliberate, abusive and deeply hurt the religious sentiments of the Sikh community.

BJP Files Complaint

In the complaint, the BJP leaders, while accusing Atishi of her “intentional” statements, warned that such statements could inflame emotions and disturb communal harmony. They further sought immediate registration of an FIR and Atishi’s arrest under relevant legal provisions.

“This is not a political issue but a matter of respect for faith and social harmony,” the complaint stated.

Bidhuri said Atishi’s remarks had “hurt the sentiments of Sikh brothers and sisters” and demanded strict legal action.

The BJP has also escalated the issue beyond Delhi. Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, along with BJP MLAs Arvinder Singh Lovely and Kailash Gahlot, is scheduled to travel to Amritsar on Thursday to raise the matter before the Sri Akal Takht Sahib.

Delhi CM Slams Atishi

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday accused Atishi of making such “shameful” comment on a Sikh guru during proceedings in the Delhi Assembly and urged Speaker Vijender Gupta to take action.

Atishi Rejects Allegations

Releasing a video statement posted on X, AAP leader Atishi rejected the allegations, calling them fabricated. She said her remarks were about the BJP avoiding a discussion on pollution and staging protests in the Assembly over the issue of stray dogs.

“The BJP deliberately added a false subtitle and inserted the name of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji into the video,” she alleged.

The AAP leader said she comes from a family where, for generations, the eldest son has adopted Sikhism, and asserted that she would never insult a Sikh Guru.
