As the NYPD found a gray backpack that might belong to the killer who brazenly killed UniversalHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and fled, Peak Design’s CEO Paul Dering said it could be an old version of their Everyday Backpack which was on the market from 2016 and 2019.
Peter Dering said after the NYPD released the photos of the suspected killer, he received many messages pointing out that the person was probably carrying a Peak Design backpack. He said he reached out to the NYPD and assured any kind of help to identify the killer.
“This is insane,” Dering said in an interview to NYT. “Every aspect of this is so insane.”
Revealing more about the bag, Dering said his company stopped selling the bag in 2019 but it was possible the bag could have been a used one sold on Peak Design’s website, but that very few such bags tend to be available. Most likely, he said, the bag in the picture was purchased between 2016 and 2019.
After a similar backpack was found in the Central Park area, the NYPD investigators did not open the bag and sent it straight to the lab for forensic testing.
The backpack was a popular one among photographers and is known as the photographers’ backpack.
Killer is not in New York City, fled by bus
Commissioner Jessica Tisch said they believe the killer is not hiding anywhere in New York City. After fleeing the spot on a bike, the killer is believed to have fled New York City on a bus. The killer left trails of clues for the police including his phone, backpack, words written on bullet shell casings etc but the culprit has not been identified or nabbed yet.
Investigators are ruling out that the killer is a hitman though he was skilled in operating the special gun that he used to kill Brian Thompson. Investigators believe he acted out of personal vengeance.
