Diogo Jota dies in crash: Supercar 'rolled and burned' - cause of death

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has died at the age of 28 in a car accident in northern Spain, according to Spanish police and multiple media reports. His 26-year-old brother, André Silva, also a professional footballer, was killed in the crash.The Spanish Civil Guard confirmed to the Associated Press that the fatal accident occurred near the western city of Zamora. Authorities say the vehicle, a Lamborghini, veered off the A-52 motorway in the early hours of Thursday and burst into flames. No other vehicles were involved.According to Marca, the crash happened near Sanabria, in the Zamora province, at kilometre 65 of the A-52. Witnesses told emergency services that the car was engulfed in flames, with fire spreading to surrounding vegetation.Daily Mail reported that the luxury sports car’s tyre is believed to have blown out while overtaking, causing the vehicle to roll before catching fire. The tragedy comes just two weeks after Jota had married his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso, with whom he had three children.Both men died at the scene, police confirmed, and an investigation into the precise cause of the crash is ongoing.

Who was Diogo Jota?

Born on 4 December 1996 in Porto, Portugal, Diogo Jota began his career with Paços de Ferreira before joining Atlético Madrid in 2016. Although he didn’t make a senior appearance for the Spanish club, he went on to impress during loan spells at FC Porto and Wolverhampton Wanderers.At Wolves, Jota became a fan favourite, helping the team gain promotion to the Premier League and scoring crucial goals. His performances caught the eye of Liverpool, who signed him in 2020.Jota quickly became an integral part of Jürgen Klopp’s attacking line-up. Known for his intelligent movement, clinical finishing and relentless work ethic, he earned praise from fans and teammates alike.On the international stage, he debuted for Portugal’s senior team in 2019 and played in Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup.
