'Dozy don is back': Photos of President Trump closing eyes in Oval Office spark buzz; internet mocks

President Donald Trump once again was labelled as “dozy don” as he appeared to doze off during an Oval Office meeting on tackling obesity. The Oval Office became chaotic when a drug executive collapsed while the Trump administration was announcing lower prices for weight loss drugs for Medicare and Medicaid recipients. In the same event, Trump was photographed leaning back into his chair with his eyes closed.“People can sleep again, because they can breathe when they go to bed,” said Dr Mehmet Oz, the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Newsom calls Trump “dozy don”

As the photograph of Trump with closed eyes during live event went viral, California Governor Gavin Newsom didn’t miss a chance to take a swipe on president. Sharing the US President’s photo, Trump captioned, “DOZY DON IS BACK!”Newsom had previously described the President as “Dozy Don” after the Commander-in-Chief appeared to fall asleep last month during a widely criticised Antifa roundtable. The jibe echoed the President’s own nickname for “Sleepy Joe” Biden, who was 81 when he dropped out of the 2024 presidential race and 82 when he completed his term. Trump became the oldest President ever to be sworn in at 78 years and 7 months and will be 82 on leaving office. The President, who often claims to manage on very little sleep and to contact staff at all hours, has also been caught apparently dozing on several occasions. In July he was seen resting his eyes during an energy and innovation event, and last year he closed his eyes during cross-examination of his former attorney Michael Cohen and again when his “hush money” trial involving Stormy Daniels got underway a month earlier, Independent reported.Colorado Representative Lauren Boebert defended him, suggesting he was praying, not sleeping, when he closed his eyes during his trial last year. “But if he is sleeping, he certainly looks pretty while he sleeps,” she said, adding, “Maybe it’s an endearing moment of prayer, though.”The President has previously been dismissive of his need for much sleep, telling supporters on the campaign trail, “You know, I’m not a big sleeper. I like three hours, four hours, I toss, I turn, I beep-de-beep, I want to find out what’s going on.”Last month the President underwent an MRI scan. “It was perfect,” he told reporters afterwards.

Netizens react

The photo also stunned several netizens. One of the users said, “Donald Trump looks like he’s running a country in his dreams. While Americans are working double shifts to afford groceries, he’s in the Oval Office taking power naps between tantrums. The stable genius can’t even stay awake long enough to read a briefing, but he wants the nuclear codes again? America doesn’t need a nap-time dictator, it needs a leader who actually gives a damn.“Another said, “There’s no need to mention “Sleepy Joe” anymore. Now we have ‘Dozing Don’.”
A user said, “I never want to hear about “Sleepy Joe” ever again when we have Dozy Dementia Don can’t keep his eyes open.”
