Dubai Night Work Permit explained: What it is, who needs it, and how to apply in 2025
A night work permit enables safe and authorized after-hours operations in Dubai/ Representative Image

TL;DR

  • If your business runs between 9 PM and 6 AM in Dubai, you may need a night work permit.
  • The permit is required for non-commercial activities like maintenance or inventory, not for retail or customer service.
  • Applying is straightforward, and approval usually comes within a day.

If your business in Dubai needs to operate outside regular hours, say, late at night or early morning, there’s something important you should know. Dubai law requires businesses to get a night work permit if they’re working between 9 PM and 6 AM.But not every business needs it. This permit is for specific types of work that take place after-hours inside commercial buildings, shopping malls, or banks. Think maintenance crews fixing lighting, staff doing inventory checks in retail stores, or film crews shooting scenes in a mall at night. It’s not for late-night shopping or customer-facing services. So why is this permit required? Mostly for safety, accountability, and legal compliance. After dark, closed spaces often have heightened security protocols. Workers moving around during these hours can trigger alarms or raise suspicion. This permit ensures everyone, employers, employees, property owners, and law enforcement, is on the same page. It’s also part of protecting the welfare of workers who are active during non-standard hours.

Who Actually Needs It?

This permit is meant for businesses or contractors doing non-commercial work after hours. You may need a night work permit if your business involves:

  • Maintenance work inside malls, shops, or banks
  • Inventory checks during store closing hours
  • Installing or updating billboards
  • Media or commercial filming in closed commercial spaces
  • Any task that must happen in a closed environment after-hours and could otherwise raise security concerns

It’s worth noting: this permit does not cover regular retail activity, customer interaction, or sales done after 9 PM. If your shop is simply open late, that falls under different rules.

How the Permit Works

Getting the night work permit is a simple process, especially if you have your documents in order. Here’s how it usually works in Dubai:

1. Documents You’ll Need

Before applying, make sure you’ve gathered all the required paperwork. Missing documents can delay approval.

  • Emirates ID (front and back) of each employee involved
  • Residency permits for all workers
  • Your business trade license
  • Trade license of any third-party service provider involved
  • Authorization letter signed by the company
  • A formal letter in Arabic addressed to Dubai CID (Criminal Investigation Department), including:
    • Name of executing company
    • Nationality and contact numbers of team leads
    • Work start and end date/time
    • List of employees in Arabic (names, nationalities, ID numbers)
  • NOC (No Objection Certificate) from the property owner or mall management
  • For banks or high-security premises (like gold shops):
    • Central Bank letter
    • Automated alarm system number
  • Short-term contract copy if the work is for under six months

2. Fees and Payment

The application isn’t expensive:

  • Dh100 ($27 USD) service fee
  • Dh10 ($2.70 USD) for knowledge fee
  • Dh10($2.70 USD) for innovation fee

You can pay via: Cash, Debit/credit cards or Apple Pay

3. Where to Apply

You have a few ways to submit your application:

  • Dubai Police mobile app
  • Dubai Police website
  • Smart Police Stations
  • Traditional police stations

Applications are usually processed within one working day, though it may vary if extra approvals are needed.

4. Permit Validity

Once approved, your night work permit is valid for 14 days. If your work lasts longer, you’ll need to renew or reapply. Also note:

  • Property management approval is mandatory
  • Central Bank approval is required for bank-related work
  • Permits are tied to specific activities (you can’t use one permit to cover unrelated jobs)

Staying Compliant with Labour Laws

This isn’t just a formality. The night work permit is part of the UAE’s broader push to support fair and safe working conditions. That includes protecting workers from burnout, setting boundaries on late-night shifts, and ensuring people aren’t forced to work in unsafe conditions. If you run a business that regularly needs to operate outside normal hours, staying on top of this permit process is a good way to avoid penalties, and show that you’re running your operations responsibly.
