Dubai motorists faced a morning of major gridlock on Sunday as a severe accident on Sheikh Zayed Road (SZR) near the Commercial Center Tunnel collided with extensive road closures scheduled for the T100 Triathlon World Championship. The double dose of disruption not only triggered warnings from Dubai Police and the RTA urging drivers to seek alternative routes but also temporarily hiked the morning peak-hour Salik toll to Dh6, ensuring that the day’s heavy traffic came with an increased price tag.

Sheikh Zayed road gridlock

Dubai Police issued a critical warning to motorists on Sunday morning regarding a significant traffic obstruction on the crucial Sheikh Zayed Road (E11). The cause was a traffic accident that occurred close to the Commercial Center Tunnel. This incident immediately affected the lanes heading toward Qarhoud Bridge, slowing down one of the city’s busiest routes during the morning commute. Authorities urged drivers to proceed with extreme caution and prudence while navigating the area. This was not the only traffic headache, as drivers already faced city-wide disruption from a major sporting event.

T100 Triathlon triggers road closures

Compounding the accident congestion, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) had already scheduled extensive closures for the T100 Triathlon World Championship on the same Sunday. This event impacted several key areas beyond Sheikh Zayed Road. The disruptions included a partial closure on Jumeirah Street, specifically the stretch from Jumeirah Mosque to Union House, which was shut down between 6:00 am and 7:30 am.To manage the race-day flow, specific roads were temporarily affected:

  • Jumeirah Street
  • Al Athar Street
  • Al Hadiqa Road
  • Al Meydan Road
  • Al Manama Street

Furthermore, the championship led to a temporary increase in Salik toll rates. The morning peak hour charge (6:00 am–10:00 am) was raised from Dh4 to Dh6 for the day, directly impacting the cost of travel during the busiest time.

Navigator’s guide

With both an unexpected accident and planned event closures creating a massive traffic chokehold, authorities strongly advised commuters to adjust their plans. The primary official advice was to plan alternative routes and allow for extra travel time. Dubai Police repeatedly emphasized the necessity of drivers remaining focused and maintaining safe distances, especially near accident scenes. Motorists were encouraged to use navigation applications to identify the best detours and follow the instructions of traffic officers on the ground to ensure a safer and more efficient journey.
