Three employees of Qatar’s Amiri Diwan, the country’s top government body, were killed in a car crash near the Red Sea resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt, Qatar’s embassy in Egypt said on Sunday. Two others were injured and are receiving medical treatment at Sharm el-Sheikh International Hospital. In a post on X, the embassy wrote: “The Embassy of the State of Qatar in Cairo expresses its deepest sorrow over the death of three members of the Amiri Diwan and is following up on the conditions of the injured in a traffic accident in Sharm El-Sheikh.”The embassy confirmed that the bodies of the deceased and the injured would be repatriated to Doha later on Sunday. An official statement was issued by Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs.According to the statement, the deceased were identified as Saud bin Nasser Al Thani, Abdullah Ghanem Al-Khulaifi and Hassan Jaber Al-Jaber. The injured are Abdullah Issa Al-Kuwari and Mohammed Abdulaziz Al-Buainain.As per two security sources, the accident occurred when a car carrying Qatari diplomats overturned on a curve on a road approximately 50 kilometres (31 miles) from Sharm el-Sheikh, as reported by news agency Reuters. The diplomats, who were from the Qatari protocol team, were travelling ahead of a high-level summit celebrating a ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Qatar mediated the ceasefire along with Egypt and the US, while Turkey also joined negotiations earlier this month in Sharm el-Sheikh. These talks culminated in a ceasefire, the release of hostages and the freeing of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. Sharm el-Sheikh is set to host the summit on Monday. It will be co-chaired by Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi and US President Donald Trump, to finalise the agreement. In its statement, the ministry also extended condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured. The embassy also thanked Egyptian authorities for their cooperation and support in handling the incident. The embassy confirmed that it promptly coordinated with the relevant Egyptian authorities and that the bodies of the deceased, along with the injured, will be flown to Doha on a Qatari aircraft today.
