End of an era? CBS Saturday Morning reportedly shutting down after network ousts its longtime hosts

CBS Saturday Morning, a fixture of weekend television for nearly 28 years, is reportedly shutting down as CBS News undergoes one of its most dramatic shake-ups in decades. The long-running programme aired its final episode with co-hosts Michelle Miller and Dana Jacobson this weekend, following their dismissal amid sweeping layoffs that have rattled the network’s newsroom.

Long-serving hosts removed as cost cuts hit CBS News

Miller, Jacobson and the show’s executive producer, Brian Applegate, were removed last month during the first wave of cuts under newly installed CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss and Network President Tom Cibrowski. Their abrupt exit sparked confusion inside the newsroom, as staff were given no clarity on replacement hosts, transition timelines or the future of the programme itself.Insiders described leadership as “tight-lipped” and communication as virtually non-existent, leaving employees anxious as reports of yet another round of job cuts loom.

No replacement hosts – and no clear future for the show

As of now, CBS Saturday Morning has no confirmed successor hosts. Adriana Diaz — who previously co-anchored the now-cancelled CBS Mornings Plus — is expected to fill in temporarily from 29 November, though sources say she is reluctant to take the role permanently. With no long-term anchor team in place, the programme is expected to rely on rotating fill-ins, with names such as Elaine Quijano, Errol Barnett, Kelly O’Grady and Jericka Duncan circulating inside the newsroom. The lack of a stable plan has added to speculation that the show, in its current form, may not survive at all. CBS News has declined to comment.

Wider cuts across CBS News and Paramount Skydance

The turmoil in the weekend programme reflects a much broader retrenchment at CBS. Parent company Paramount Skydance is in the midst of a massive restructuring following its merger, targeting around two billion dollars in savings. Last month alone, roughly 1,000 jobs were cut across the company, with more expected.CBS News’ first wave claimed around 100 newsroom roles, including several high-profile departures: CBS Evening News anchor John Dickerson, correspondents Janet Shamlian, Nancy Chen and Nikki Battiste, contributor Lisa Ling and foreign correspondent Debora Patta — who, despite signing a new contract months before, is reportedly exploring legal action.Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison recently confirmed that an additional 1,600 job cuts are coming as part of a strategic review, though the timing and impact on CBS News remain unclear.

End of a staple weekend show?

For now, the future of CBS Saturday Morning remains clouded by uncertainty. With its longtime hosts gone, no permanent replacements announced and heavy corporate cuts continuing, insiders believe the network may be preparing to shutter or completely overhaul the nearly three-decade-old programme. If confirmed, it would mark the end of a familiar presence on American weekend television — and another sign of the profound transformation sweeping through CBS News.
