A fire broke out at Iran’s oldest and largest oil refinery, state media reported on Sunday. The incident occurred on Saturday(local time) due to a leaky pump in an under-repair unit of the Abadan oil facility. The fire killed one worker and injured several others, confirmed Iran’s Deputy Parliament Speaker Ali Nikzad on Sunday, reported AP. Emergency teams responded and brought the blaze under control within two hours. However, details about the severity of their condition remain unclear. The Abadan refinery, located about 670 kilometres southwest of Tehran, is the largest refinery in the Islamic Republic. It began operations in 1912 and accounts for approximately 25% of the nation’s fuel production, with a refining capacity exceeding 5.2 million barrels per day.The incident at Abadan comes amid a spate of recent fires across Iran, affecting both residential and commercial properties. Authorities have attributed these incidents to gas leaks and electrical short-circuits.The government has yet to announce any further investigations into the Abadan refinery fire.
