The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday accused the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) of attempting to shield fraudulent voters after the Election Commission flagged what it called “scientifically impossible” anomalies in West Bengal’s electoral rolls during the SIR exercise.

BJP leader Pradeep Bhandari claimed that the ruling TMC was deliberately blocking the submission of Form 7 applications to prevent scrutiny of the voter list.

“The SIR has found a man listed as the father of 389 voters. This is why TMC is not allowing Form 7 to be submitted to the Electoral Registration Officer. Form 7 will expose TMC’s attempt to keep dead and shifted voters on the rolls,” he said in a post on X, branding the TMC a “Ghusbaihya Bachao Congress.”

Bhandari’s remarks came after the poll body found that during the SIR exercise, one person in Asansol was recorded as the father of 389 voters, while another individual in Bally constituency in Howrah district was shown as the father of 310 voters.

While presenting the facts in the Supreme Court during the SIR hearing on Monday, the poll body said that such cases fall under “logical discrepancies” requiring correction. EC counsel Rakesh Dwivedi said that notices have been issued to affected voters, placing the onus on them to produce documents to verify correct parental details, Times of India reported.

According to the poll body, seven people have been linked as parents to more than 100 voters each, while thousands of others were connected to unusually large numbers of electors.

During the hearing, the Election Commission also flagged discrepancies such as abnormal age gaps between electors and parents or grandparents, and mismatches between names recorded in earlier electoral rolls and the current list. Over 1.25 crore voters have been identified with such issues across the state.

Meanwhile, the top court has directed the Election Commission to publish the names of voters facing “logical discrepancy” objections so that corrections can be made.
