In his video, Girlalala’s father spoke with strong emotion. He said people were “doing this for the show” and not thinking about his child. He said he loved Girlalala but did not want the funeral to show her in a way that went against “how God gave him.” Because of this, he said he would not attend if she was buried wearing a wig.He added that the public viewing would still be open. Fans could come and say goodbye. But he repeated that he would not join the funeral if a wig was used. He said, “Put my son in some pop smoke braids with a short tape or an afro for the last time.”His comments brought strong reactions. Many LGBTQ+ advocates said that honoring a person’s gender identity after death is very important. They said Girlalala lived proudly as a transgender woman and should be remembered in the same way. Others said families often struggle with grief and identity at the same time.Police records say Shanoyd Whyte Jr. waved down deputies near the scene and showed them the car where Girlalala was found with many gunshot wounds.
