Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Wednesday condemned the tabling of three Bills that seek removal of ministers if they have been arrested for 30 consecutive days on serious criminal charges.

Rahul Gandhi said the move seems to be taking the country to “medieval times” when rulers could dismiss officials at will.

“There is a lot of action going on about the new Bill that the BJP is proposing. We are going back to medieval times when the king could just remove anybody at will. There’s no concept of what an elected person is,” the Congress leader said.

The LoP further accused the ruling party of using investigative agencies to target elected representatives. “He doesn’t like your face, so he tells ED to put a case, and then a democratically elected person is wiped out within 30 days,” he added.

In response to upcoming Vice President election, Gandhi also brought up matter of sudden resignation of the former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. “Also, let’s not forget why we are electing a new Vice President. Just yesterday I was having a conversation with somebody and I said, you know, where is the old vice president gone? He’s gone….,” he further said.

3 Bills Introduced In Lok Sabha Today

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday introduced three bills in Lok Sabha, including the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, which seeks to remove the Prime Minister or Chief Ministers who are facing allegations of corruption or serious offences and have been detained for 30 consecutive days.

Shah introduced the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, to further amend the Constitution of India and the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, apart from the bill to amend the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019.

The Constitution Amendment Bill will amend Article 75 of the Constitution, which primarily deals with the appointment and responsibilities of the Council of Ministers, including the Prime Minister.

The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2025 seeks to amend section 54 of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, to provide a legal framework for the removal of the Chief Minister or a Minister in case of arrest or detention in custody on account of serious criminal charges.

As the three bills were introduced, the opposition went in attack mode and tore copies of the legislation amid rowdy scenes inside the lower House on Wednesday.

The opposition has called it “draconian” and claiming the government might use it to create trouble in states ruled by the opposition by arresting ministers and chief ministers without good reason.

Right now, there is no rule to remove a sitting minister from their post if they are accused of a serious crime.
