When Shahana Fatima from Nagpur set out to shape her career, she didn’t know that a few words spoken by a political leader at a public event would go on to define her future. Today, she stands as one of the seven distinguished students selected by the prestigious Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, to represent their colleges for her exceptional contributions in the field of cybersecurity. And she attributes her turning point to the inspiring words of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Nagpur-based Fatima secured first class in her Master’s programme in cyber forensics and securities from Illinois institute of technology University, USA. Also, considering her work in the cyber security field, she was selected by her institute as the best student in the discipline.

Years ago, while attending a programme in Nagpur, Fatima heard Fadnavis say: “There was a time when this world was dominated by countries with oil reserves but today, countries having huge data are prospering and progressing.”

For Fatima, it wasn’t just a statement—it was a call to action. Motivated by this, she decided to pursue a career in a field that not only fascinated her but also needed more women leaders. She went on to complete her graduation in Forensics and Cybersecurity from Hislop College, Nagpur. Her commitment and passion led her to the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago where she completed her Master’s in Cybersecurity with distinction.

In 2024, she received an opportunity to work with Covalon, a reputed company in the United States, where she was the only woman selected for a specialised research project. She played a crucial role in designing cybersecurity infrastructure for the firm, proving her mettle in a highly competitive and male-dominated domain.

Fatima credits not only Fadnavis for her journey but also her mentor Dr Rizwan Ahmed, an expert in digital forensics, who helped shape her professional path with continuous guidance and support.

Her story is a testament to how inspirational leadership can ignite ambition and courage in young minds. Today, Fatima is more than just a skilled cybersecurity professional—she is a symbol of what determination, direction, and the right inspiration can achieve.
