‘How Is That Possible?’: Bengal BJP MP Rebukes Mamata’s Claim Linking Injuries To Diabetes – Delhi News Daily

BJP MP Khagen Murmu has rebuked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s claim that his hospitalisation following a violent attack was mainly due to his diabetes, rather than serious physical injuries.

Speaking to CNN-News18 on Wednesday, Murmu hit back, saying, “The facial bones are broken. I’ve been injured badly, and they are linking it with diabetes. How is that possible? There is something wrong with their eyes or brain.”

Murmu, the BJP MP from Malda North, suffered a fracture below his eye and other facial injuries after being attacked on Monday in Jalpaiguri’s Nagrakata area.

He had been distributing relief materials to flood and landslide-affected residents alongside BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh when the incident occurred. Stones were hurled at their convoy, leading to chaos and serious injuries.

Despite his visible trauma, Banerjee, who visited Murmu in hospital on Tuesday, appeared to downplay the severity of his injuries.

“He is diabetic, but there is nothing very serious. I have also spoken to the doctors. He is under observation due to diabetes. I wished him a speedy recovery,” Mamata told reporters after her visit to the private hospital in Siliguri.

Murmu, however, rejected this explanation outright. “I am in pain. I’m not doing well. I can’t even chew food. I’ve been surviving on liquid food,” he said, adding that he had to instruct his driver to rush him to hospital as attackers continued throwing stones even after he sat inside the car.

The assault on Murmu and Ghosh has sparked a political storm, with the BJP accusing Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers of orchestrating the attack.

Party leaders have described the incident as further evidence of “jungle raj” in the state, and criticised the ruling party for its alleged failure to protect public representatives and ensure safe disaster relief operations.
