'I did it': US woman confesses to 1997 baby's death on camera, recounts chilling moments
Keri Mazzuca confessing her crime (Screengrab from video)

A 52-year-old US woman was initially denied involvement in a 1997 infant murder case, but within an hour, she dramatically confessed to a terrible crime during a police interview. The 1997 murder case began after the authorities found a child’s body, who was named Baby Moses, under a Moses Statue in Albany’s Washington Park.Recent developments in DNA technology led to a breakthrough in the case during the summer. Authorities questioned Keri Mazzuca in September 2024, with the interview footage recently released, Daily Mail reported.During the recorded interview, Mazzuca initially maintained a casual demeanour, calmly gesturing while denying any connection to the case. When Detective Rob Lawyer enquired about potential leads, she responded negatively.Upon being presented with photographic evidence and DNA findings suggesting her maternal connection, Mazzuca acknowledged her guilt and confessed: “I did it.”

Baby Moses’ mother talks about setting fire

She revealed giving birth in her bathtub, transporting the infant in her car, and ultimately burning the remains.Despite initially claiming to have handed the baby to a stranger, she later admitted to suffocating the child. The autopsy revealed the infant had been breathing, contradicting her claims of natural death.Mazzuca can then be heard confessing that she suffocated the child by putting him in a bag, saying she couldn’t remember if she had smothered him. Following her guilty plea to manslaughter in February, she received a 25-year prison sentence, as per News10. The case had remained unsolved since park workers discovered a charred blue pillowcase containing the infant’s remains in 1997.The community had honoured the infant, naming him Moses Washington. He received a proper burial with a white casket and a marble headstone featuring a lamb, inscribed: “Citizen of Albany, child of God.”
