'I was not the heroine’s voice': How OP Nayyar rescued Asha Bhosle from the fringes of playback singing and never recorded with Lata Mangeshkar - Exclusive
On O.P. Nayyar’s 19th death anniversary, we take a look at his legendary defiance of industry norms. By making Asha Bhosle the voice of the heroine in hits like ‘Naya Daur’, he rescued her from the fringes. Despite his “invincible” success, his ego famously prevented him from ever recording with Lata Mangeshkar.

Today, January 28, 2026, marks the 19th death anniversary of the “King of Rhythm,” Omkar Prasad Nayyar, popularly known as O.P. Nayyar. Nayyar remains the only legendary composer of the Golden Era who reached the pinnacle of success without ever recording a single song with the Nightingale of India, Lata Mangeshkar. His collaboration with Asha Bhosle was a professional and personal alliance that lasted nearly two decades. It transformed her from a “singer for vamps” into the definitive voice of the Hindi film heroine, leading them to be celebrated as one of the most invincible duos in Bollywood.Asha Bhosle and O P Nayyar’s combination was invincible. Not even the indomitable Lata Mangeshkar could come between them. Much before R D Burman, it was Nayyar who rescued Asha Bhosle from the fringes of playback singing.

Asha Bhosle on rising from the fringes

Asha Bhosle admits as much, “Before Nayyar Saab came into my life, I was not the heroine’s voice. Lata Didi was. I used to sing for the vamp or the supporting actress. Nayyar Saab made me the heroine’s voice in ‘Tumsa Nahin Dekha’ and ‘Naya Daur’ in the 1950s. Then followed one chartbuster after another in the 1960s. Mujhe toh yaad bhi nahin kitne saare hit gaane aaye (I can’t even remember the number of hits).”The songstress further praises Nayyar, “He had his own very distinct style of composition, very Punjabi very robust…Among the great composers of that era like Shankar-Jaikishan, Sachin Dev Burman and Madan Mohan, Nayyar Saab stood out.”Known to be extremely temperamental and egoistic, Nayyar parted ways with Asha Bhosle in 1972. Apparently, Nayyar vowed to replace Ashaji in his compositions with equally successful singers. His attempts to recreate Ashaji’s magic with voices like Krishna Kalle and Dilraj Kaur in the 1970s and 80s were miserable failures.O P Nayyar died a bitter lonely man whose ego never allowed him to approach Lataji for a single song after she failed to turn up for a recording of a song in a film titled ‘Aasman’ in 1952.

Lata Mangeshkar and OP Nayyar

Lata Mangeshkar once told the writer that Nayyar and she remained friends in spite of their professional distance. He would call her out of the blue and tease her about her habit of rehearsing songs on the telephone.“If you want to sing for me you have to come to the studio for rehearsal,” Nayyar bantered with the Nightingale. He stopped recording songs with Mohammed Rafi over a misunderstanding and replaced him with Mahendra Kapoor in several chartbusters in the 1960s. Sadly for all his talent, Asha Bhosle proved irreplaceable for Nayyar.
