DK Shivakumar and Chalavadi Narayanaswamy clash in Karnataka over a Cartier watch, with the former presenting his Lokayukta affidavit.

Shivakumar was seen wearing the watch during his meeting with CM Siddaramaiah.

Shivakumar was seen wearing the watch during his meeting with CM Siddaramaiah.

The controversy over luxury watches has escalated in Karnataka politics, with Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar intensely confronting Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council, Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, over allegations regarding his high-end timepiece.

Shivakumar vehemently hit back at Narayanaswamy after the MLC questioned the source and accounting of his Cartier watch. The Deputy CM presented his affidavit submitted to the Lokayukta as definitive proof against the opposition’s claims.

He took the challenge directly to Narayanaswamy, saying, “If I have lied about the watch, I will resign today. Otherwise, will Narayanaswamy resign?”

Shivakumar warned the opposition leader against making statements “merely for publicity” and urged him to personally check the affidavit. He affirmed that all disclosures have been made, including in 2025, indicating a consistent record.

Reinforcing his stance, Shivakumar took to social media, addressing Narayanaswamy directly and accused him of spreading “falsehoods.”

In his post, he stated, “Mr. @NswamyChalavadi, please take a moment to review the affidavit I submitted to the Lokayukta. As someone in a position of responsibility, speaking falsehoods for convenience is not only wrong but also undermines your integrity… Do I, or even CM Siddaramaiah, not have the right to wear a watch of our choice? I urge you to refrain from making baseless remarks and exercise your constitutional authority wisely and responsibly.”

He extended an open invitation to the MLC to “visit the Lokayukta office and verify my affidavit”

However, the war of words did not end there. Chalavadi Narayanaswamy swiftly delivered a counter-reply, welcoming the release of the documents but introducing a new line of questioning focused on past affidavits.

Narayanaswamy acknowledged Shivakumar’s statement that he purchased the watch and verified his current declarations. “We are not envious; DK Shivakumar can wear a hundred watches,” he remarked.

The Opposition leader shifted the focus to the lack of information in prior disclosures and claimed that there is “no information about the Cartier watch” in the 2018 and 2023 affidavits.
