Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray has issued a strong warning ahead of the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, calling it a decisive moment for the city’s Marathi populace.

Addressing supporters during the inauguration of the MNS’ Konkan Mahotsav on Sunday, Thackeray said the forthcoming civic polls carry extraordinary significance for the community, urging voters to stay “vigilant” ahead of the BMC elections.

Thackeray, whose party has frequently faced allegations of targeting non-Marathi speakers, said the political climate surrounding the city’s civic polls was growing increasingly tense and urged people to exercise caution.

“For the Marathi people, this BMC election will be the last crucial election,” he said. “If we remain careless, consider it gone from our hands.” He added that “if Mumbai slips out of our hands, these people will create havoc.”

He further raised concerns about alleged irregularities in voter lists. “It is important for you to pay attention to whether the voters are genuine or bogus,” he said.

Thackeray’s sharpened stance comes months after he offered unconditional support to the Mahayuti alliance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. However, following the MNS’s setback in the subsequent state polls, his tone and political positioning have shifted significantly.

Amid these shifting dynamics, the increasing proximity between Raj Thackeray and his cousin, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, has emerged as a major talking point in Maharashtra’s political circles. Once fierce rivals, the two now appear more in sync, not only at family gatherings but increasingly in their political posturing as well.

Polling on December 2 will be conducted using EVMs to elect 6,859 members and 288 presidents across 246 municipal councils and 42 nagar panchayats. The counting of votes is scheduled for December 3.
