An old rumor that Rep Ilhan Omar married her brother and committed immigration fraud resurfaced as a report claimed that it is not anymore a rumor as a personal friend has now confirmed on record that she indeed married her brother. According to the UK Daily Mail, sources confirmed that Omar told her friends that her second husband was actually her brother and that the marriage was a scam to get him immigration papers. One of these friends told the newspaper that when this apparent marriage happened, it was considered a major scandal in Minneapolis’ Somali community. At that time the Democrat leader was not a political figure.
“No posts from @IlhanMN or @Ilhan since this was confirmed to be true,” a post read. Ilhan Omar replied to it and wrote: “The only thing that is confirmed is your stupidity, hope that helps.”
In past, even Donald Trump promoted the rumor that Ilhan married her brother while the Minneapolis Congress woman denied that she and her second husband were related. DailyMail quoted Abdihakim Osman, a friend of Omar’s first and third husband who confirmed that it was a well-known scam. He reportedly said that the marriage was conducted through a Christian minister even though both Omar and Ahmed Elmi are Muslims.
The DailyMail provided a chronology of events that unfolded after Ilhan Omar and her family settled in Minnesota after fleeing war-torn Somalia in 1997. In 2002, she married Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi in a religious ceremony but it was not recognized legally. The couple have two children. In 2009, Omar married Ahmed Elmi and in 2011 they split. In 2012, Omar and her first husband Hirsi had their third child. In 2017, Omar divorced Elmi and in 2018, she remarried Hirsi. Now Omar and Hirsi are divorced.
The report said that there is no evidence to prove that Omar and Elmi are brothers and sisters. In 2020, the FBI was reviewing the marriage.
“She (Omar) said she needed to get papers for her brother to go to school. We all thought she was just getting papers to allow him to stay in this country,” the friend said.
