Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Sunday that he is willing to participate in a public debate on how UDF MPs from the state have performed in Parliament, inviting the opposition to propose a date and time.

Pinarayi Vijayan was responding to reporters who asked about AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal’s challenge, questioning whether Vijayan was prepared for an open discussion on the issue.

Venugopal’s remarks came after Vijayan recently criticised UDF MPs, saying they had not adequately highlighted Kerala’s development concerns in Parliament and had, on several occasions, acted in ways that went against the state’s interests, news agency PTI reported.

“Certainly I am ready (for an open debate). Let them decide the time and venue,” the Chief Minister stated. He also questioned how Venugopal could be unaware of the track record of the UDF MPs.

Vijayan further accused the MPs of siding with the Centre in what he described as attempts to undermine Kerala, alleging that they even suggested measures encouraging the Union government to take positions detrimental to the state.

He additionally claimed that opposition MPs sought to have all AAY (Antyodaya Anna Yojana) ration cards in Kerala scrapped by raising related questions in Parliament shortly after the state was declared free of extreme poverty.
