Ash Cloud From Ethiopia Hits India’s Airspace At High Speed, DGCA Issues Urgent Safety Advisory
India witnessed rare aviation turbulence after volcanic ash from Ethiopia’s Hayli Gubbi volcano, dormant for nearly 10,000 years, surged across international air routes and entered the country’s airspace. The fast-moving plume travelled at 100–120 km/h, carrying hazardous ash particles, sulphur dioxide, and microscopic glass capable of damaging aircraft engines. Beginning in Gujarat, the cloud drifted toward Rajasthan and Delhi, triggering multiple flight cancellations, diversions and safety checks. IndiGo and Akasa Air cancelled Middle East routes, while other carriers rerouted planes to avoid the ash corridor. DGCA instructed airports to conduct surface inspections and airlines to immediately report any ash encounters. With authorities tracking the plume’s continued movement toward the Himalayas, passengers across India were warned of evolving disruptions.
