Israel-Iran war: Donald Trump to decide on Iran strike in 2 weeks; White House cites 'substantial' chance of negotiations to end conflict

US President Donald Trump on Thursday said he will decide within the next two weeks whether to join Israel in its military strikes on Iran, noting that there is still a “substantial” possibility of negotiations to resolve the conflict peacefully. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt read out Trump’s message, acknowledging ongoing speculation about “direct US involvement” and emphasising that any decision would depend on forthcoming talks with Iran.“Based on the fact that there’s a substantial chance of negotiations that may or may not take place with Iran in the near future, I will make my decision whether or not to go within the next two weeks,” Trump said in the statement. This declaration potentially eases tensions and creates room for diplomatic efforts, following recent days when Trump described Iran’s leader as an “easy target” whilst asserting Tehran would never possess nuclear capabilities.Leavitt told reporters that Iran could build a nuclear weapon quickly, saying it might take just a couple of weeks to complete. “Iran has all that it needs to achieve a nuclear weapon. All they need is a decision from the supreme leader to do that, and it would take a couple of weeks to complete the production of that weapon,” Leavitt said.Trump’s Wednesday statement about Iranian officials requesting White House negotiations regarding their nuclear programme and the Israel conflict was subsequently denied by Iran.Leavitt did not reveal what made President Trump believe negotiations with Iran were possible but denied he was delaying a decision.“If there’s a chance for diplomacy the president’s always going to grab it, but he’s not afraid to use strength as well,” she noted.Leavitt also confirmed that “correspondence has continued” between the US and Iran, when asked about reports that Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff had been in contact with Iran’s foreign minister.Trump conducted his third consecutive daily meeting in the White House Situation Room whilst considering US participation in Israel’s bombing campaign.Trump had earlier on Wednesday said that, “I may do it, I may not do it,” when asked whether he would order military strikes against Iran, signaling continued uncertainty over possible US involvement in the escalating conflict.Trump, who had initially pursued a diplomatic route to negotiate a new nuclear agreement with Iran, after withdrawing from the original deal in 2018—has in recent weeks shifted toward supporting Israel’s strikes on Iranian nuclear and military infrastructure. Now, he is weighing whether to actively participate in the offensive.A key factor in the decision is the Fordo nuclear facility, widely considered Iran’s most fortified site. Experts say only the US possesses the powerful “bunker buster” bombs capable of destroying the underground enrichment plant, making American involvement potentially decisive.
