Jagdeep Dhankhar has resigned as the Vice President of India leaving many in the political circles stunned. While Dhankhar has cited health reasons for stepping down, the Opposition is already questioning if there’s more to it. Many political commentators are also keenly watching the developments questioning if this has got anything to do with the forthcoming Bihar Assembly elections later this year.
Speculation is rife around several names on social media and political circles who could become the next Vice President of India. From Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, several names are being circulated on social media with guesswork on over who will succeed Dhankhar.
Nitish Kumar
There is huge buzz on the Internet that Nitish Kumar could be the next Vice President. Those circulating Nitish Kumar’s name say the BJP may be looking at someone from the party for the Bihar CM’s post while the current CM could be made VP ahead of polls in the state. “Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is set to become the next Vice President of the country. In Bihar, the BJP will appoint its own Chief Minister for the elections. The JDU will have the Deputy Chief Minister. Nitish’s son Nishant may be appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister,” political journalist Sameer Chougaonkar posted on X.
Some social media users are even guessing that while Nitish could be made VP, Dhankhar may be appointed as the National President of BJP.
In fact, a BJP MLA from Bihar has said that Nitish as next VP is “everyone’s wish”. BJP MLA Haribhushan Thakur Bachoul said, “What could be better than Nitish Kumar being made Vice President? Whether Nitish Kumar becomes the Vice President or not, everyone wants it.”
Rajnath Singh
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s name is also being circulated on social media with many guessing he could succeed Dhankhar as the Vice President of India. Singh’s name had also surfaced as the probable candidates for the VP’s post in 2022 when the election for the post was held. This time, too, several on social media are speculating that it could be Rajnath Singh.
Harivansh Narayan Singh
Singh’s name is at the forefront of speculation. Media reports are also citing JDU MP Harivansh Narayan Singh as the “obvious next choice” for the post of VP as he is currently the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. As per the rules of the Constitution, Singh will take over the duties of Rajya Sabha Chairman (VP) starting today, in the absence of Dhankar, till a new Vice President is elected.
Those on social media say that Singh shares cordial relations with both Nitish Kumar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and therefore, many believe the NDA may make him the VP candidate.
Shashi Tharoor
The one naming creating major buzz on social media is that of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor. The speculation gained pace after a senior journalist posted on X, “2 prominent NDA union ministers and Shashi Tharoor are possible contenders for V-P.”

Tharoor’s differences with the Congress and proximity with the Modi government, especially after he was part of the government’s outreach programme on Operation Sindoor, hae been making headlines for days now. There is growing buzz that Tharoor’s name could come forward for the post of the Vice President.
JP Nadda
There is growing buzz over the name of BJP National President JP Nadda. Nadda has been a BJP veteran and is known to be close to PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. His term as the BJP President is ending with the party on the lookout to find his replacement. However, there are murmurs he could be considered for the post of India’s Vice President.
Apart from these, other names being circulated on social media for the post of India’s next Vice President include Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. However, these are all speculation as there has been no official word yet on who the NDA or Opposition would propose as Dhankhar’s successor. The election for the next VP has to be held within the next 60 days.
