Supreme Court Allows Stray Dogs Back On Streets, But Bans Feeding Them In Public Spaces

In a landmark ruling, the Supreme Court has stayed its earlier order to round up stray dogs, directing instead that they be sterilised, vaccinated, and released back into their original areas. However, in a dramatic twist, the Court has also imposed a nationwide ban on feeding stray dogs in public places, instructing civic bodies to create designated feeding zones in every municipal ward. The verdict has sparked heated debate across India, balancing compassion for animals with public health and safety concerns. Dogs infected with rabies or showing aggressive behaviour are to be shifted to shelters, while adoption is encouraged under strict conditions. The order also bars individuals and NGOs from obstructing civic authorities in managing strays, warning of legal action. With this decision, the Court has widened its scope to all states, turning the stray dog crisis into a national debate. Will the new rules reduce conflicts or deepen tensions between dog lovers, civic bodies, and residents?
