Actor-politician Kamal Haasan is set to enter the Rajya Sabha with support from the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). DMK informed that Haasan will be fielded for Rajya Sabha elections through the alliance in accordance with the poll deal before the Lok Sabha elections in 2024.
The veteran actor-politician was promised the seat after his Makkal Needhi Maiam formally joined the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) in March 2024 ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. The alliance swept all 39 parliamentary seats in Tamil Nadu.
A total of six seats in Tamil Nadu will fall vacant in June and July. The ruling DMK-led alliance appears set to win four of the six seats falling vacant, while the AIADMK and its alliance partner PMK, will seek to retain the two seats they currently hold.
Of the four seats that the DMK is likely to win, one will go to Kamal Haasan.
The development comes amid a row sparked by Haasan where he linked the Kannada language’s roots to Tamil. The remarks, made during a promotional event for his upcoming film Thug Life in Bengaluru, have triggered sharp criticism from Kannada activists and political leaders, including Karnataka BJP president B Y Vijayendra.
Haasan’s ‘Kannada Born From Tamil’ Remark Sparks Row
The South superstar sparked a storm just weeks ahead of his film Thug Life’s release, claiming that “Kannada was born out of Tamil”. The actor’s remarks soon went viral and has triggered outrage across Karnataka.
The remarks were made during the launch of his latest film at an event in Chennai. Addressing the crowd at the event, Kamal began his speech with, “Uyire Urave Tamizhe,” which translates to “my life and my family is Tamil language.”
He then turned to Shivarajkumar, a Kannada actor present at the event. Haasan said, “This is my family. That’s why he (Shivarajkumar) has come here. That’s why I began my speech saying life, relationship and Tamil. Your language (Kannada) was born out of Tamil, so you too are included,” said Haasan.
