Kuwait has launched its first geological park, a public, educational and eco-tourism project designed to showcase the country’s rock formations, desert landscapes and natural heritage while supporting research, schools and sustainable tourism. What is the GeoPark and why is Kuwait launching it?Kuwait is stepping into a new era of environmental and scientific tourism with the launch of its groundbreaking Geo Park project, the first geological park of its kind in the nation. Scheduled to open at the end of December 2025, this landmark initiative is designed to be a fully integrated hub focusing on three core pillars: education, research, and eco-tourism. The park is positioned along a strategically chosen natural landscape, with a proposed pilot site in the Al-Subbiya area and a main location mentioned as north of Kuwait Bay, placing it less than an hour’s drive from Kuwait City. The GeoPark (sometimes called the Jeopark) is a new protected area focused on unique geological features of Kuwait, built to be both an “open-air laboratory” for students and researchers and a visitor destination for families and tourists. Authorities say the park will combine outdoor geological trails, interpretive signage, interactive exhibits and a visitor centre to explain Kuwait’s Earth history and biodiversity. The government-backed initiative is spearheaded by the Kuwait Oil Company (KOC), reflecting a collaborative national effort to promote environmental stewardship and economic diversification.

What does Kuwait’s Geological park offer?

The Kuwait Geological Park is an open-air laboratory that invites visitors on a journey through millions of years of natural history. Every element of the park is designed to be interactive and informative, ensuring visitors gain a deep understanding of the region’s geological evolution.

  • The park features carefully curated exhibits, including diverse rock formations, important fossil sites, and illustrative panels that tell the story of Kuwait’s formation. A centerpiece feature, this wall physically illustrates the country’s entire geological history, from ancient times right up to the present.

  • Guests can visit an Interactive Mineral Garden where they can touch and explore various native minerals. There will also be educational trails, guided nature walks, and workshops focused on earth sciences. Visitors will be able to see spectacular sand injectite ground-surface features, striking, red geological structures that geoscientists note strongly resemble the landscape of Mars.

  • The site’s significance extends to human history, preserving evidence of Neolithic communities and archaeological sites dating back over 10,000 years, including those linked to the ancient Ubaid civilization. It is also the historical location of Kuwait’s first oil exploration well, Bahra-1, drilled in 1936, symbolizing the dawn of the modern state.

Path towards UNESCOThe Geo Park is far more than a local attraction; it is a critical part of Kuwait’s national strategy, aligning directly with the overarching “New Kuwait 2035” Vision to diversify the economy and promote sustainable growth. The ultimate goal is to qualify the site for inclusion in the prestigious UNESCO Global Geoparks Network (GGN), which recognizes areas of international geological significance that integrate conservation, education, and sustainable development. The project is being rolled out in two distinct phases:

  • Phase 1 (Rapid Plan): Focuses on developing an accessible 20 square kilometer area to serve as the immediate public attraction.
  • Phase 2 (Long-Term Expansion): Will expand the park’s total footprint to a massive 1,000 square kilometers. This phase includes major ecological restoration efforts, such as greening the desert landscape and planting over 300 native plant species, like the ghaf and acacia trees.

Dr. Mubarak Al-Hajri, Chairman of the Kuwait Society for Earth Sciences, affirmed the importance of the initiative, stating that the park will contribute to sustainable development while preserving the nation’s geological and cultural heritage. He noted that the Geo Park will serve as a vital component for promoting scientific research and fostering a new generation of environmental stewards, thereby enhancing Kuwait’s global appreciation for its natural assets. With its blend of science, conservation and gentle eco-tourism, the park promises an accessible outdoor space that encourages learning as much as leisure. While final ticket prices and visitor timings are yet to be announced, officials have confirmed that more details will be released closer to the park’s opening later this year. For now, anticipation is building, and the GeoPark is already emerging as one of Kuwait’s most exciting new public destinations.
